How to Find Activities for Your Children this Summer, Without Breaking the Bank

Summer is here and kids are out of school! Although exciting for your kiddos, that means parents are left to find new sources of entertainment for the summer months. Finding activities or childcare for your child is not only stressful, but costly. To help busy parents with this task, below is a list of free or low cost activities for children in the Lapeer area. This may include parent supervised activities, camps and childcare options.

 

Family Events

Lunch on the Lawn- Marguerite deAngeli Library, Lapeer
This free event takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at 12pm from June 21 to August 4th. At Lunch on the Lawn, all children ages 0-18 are welcome to a FREE lunch paired with a kid friendly activity. Activities most commonly consist of story time, but may vary depending on the session. Registration is required one week in advance and can be done by contacting the deAngeli Children’s Department at (810)-664-6971. *if bad weather may arise, the event will be moved indoors and limited to the first 40 participants*

Interactive Disney Movies- Marguerite deAngeli Library, Lapeer
A family friendly free interactive movie event occurring every Friday in July at 2:30pm! Popsicles will be provided to the kids. The movie will take place in the deAngeli meeting room and registration can be completed at: https://www.library.lapeer.org/event/interactive-movies

Family Fun Day- Lake Callis, Davison
Family Fun Day at Lake Callis on Monday, July 18th from 12-8pm. For a $10 per vehicle gate fee (non-residents) or $5 per vehicle gate fee (residents), your family can experience a great day of fun! Admission includes access to inflatable slides, bounce houses and games. Food trucks will also be present for purchase of food items.

Kids Night at Blend- Blend Frozen Yogurt Bar, Lapeer
The whole family is welcome at Blend Frozen Yogurt Bar on Tuesday, August 9th from 5:30-8:30pm. FREE live entertainment by Mr. Wizard and Fun with Sparkles along with one-price yogurt cups for all kids 12 and under.

While we all love participating in activities with our children, we also know that sometimes parents are in need of a break or a responsible caregiver. Some alternative activities can consist of kids only camps as well as child care services. These options listed below allow parents to drop off their child in a safe, controlled environment for some summer fun!

 

Kids Only Camps

Day Camp- Lapeer Community Center
The Community Center of Lapeer offers a children’s day camp every weekday from 9am-3pm until August 26th. This camp comes at a cost of $40 per day ($45 on Fridays). The camp runs with a theme each week which correlates with various games and field trips the kids will participate in. All children ages Kindergarten to 5th grade are welcome and lunch will be provided during the camp. Youth Financial Assistance at Lapeer Community Center
Financial assistance is offered to youth participating in camps, classes and programs. Upon applying, children can be granted a scholarship covering 50% of the program cost. Summer Skate Camp- Lapeer Area Sports and Entertainment Rink
Summer skate camp is rolling from July 18th-22nd! The camp takes place from 9am-2pm for $30 per day. With this $30 payment, your child will be treated with a daily craft, skating, bounce houses, games, facepaint and more. Children will also be provided with lunch, snacks and drinks during their time at the rink. Call to register at (810)-664-6681.

Imlay City Boys Basketball Camp- Imlay City High School
Youth boys basketball camp August 1st-4th at Imlay City High School. Grades 1-4 take place from 9am-11am and grades 5-8 take place from 12pm-2pm. The boys attending will have the opportunity to be coached by high school basketball players and coaches. At a cost of $40 per player (or $50 per family), the camp also includes a t-shirt. Lapeer Girls Basketball Camp- Lapeer High School
Join the Lapeer High School Girls Basketball team at camp August 2nd-4th! Offered to grades 3-5 from 9am-11am and grades 6-8 from 11am-1pm. These fun filled days cost $30 per day or $60 for 3 days with a t-shirt included. It is asked that the child comes equipped with a water bottle and basketball with their name on it. North Branch Softball Camp- North Branch High School
Softball Camp run by the North Branch Varsity softball players taking place August 8th-10th. All Kids from grades 1-8 are welcome from 9am-12pm each day. This camp runs at a cost of $20 per day or $50 for 3 days, must register by July 18th to guarantee a t-shirt. Registration is available on the North Branch Varsity Softball facebook page.

 

Child Care Assistance

Although there are various child care options in the Lapeer Area, affordability is also important.
