July’s Community Spotlight Member:
The Watson Family
The Child Advocacy Center of Lapeer County would like to spotlight the Watson Family as July’s Community Spotlight Member. Since the Watson family has been involved with the Center, they have volunteered at every event the CAC participants in throughout the year. They have played a tremendous role in securing funds for the CAC by providing help at events and providing knowledge and resources in order to help the CAC continue to grow. With their endless support we have continuously been able to provide Lapeer County with education, knowledge, and resources relating to the issue of child abuse and neglect.
As mentioned above, the Watson family has been an integral part of the CAC as they have contributed much of their time and efforts to the Center. In 2016 Kelly Watson, received the Child Advocacy Center’s Volunteer of the Year Award and currently serves as a member on the CAC’s Board of Directors. In addition to Kelly’s contributions, her husband Craig and children Gabe and Ava also support the Center by volunteering at the CAC’s events. Both Kelly and Craig work hard to raise money for organizations that are close to their hearts and needless to say, the Center is one of those. For Kelly, her involvement with the CAC started with her love for kids, but then after one short four-hour shift in the ER she knew she had to get involved and help kids in difficult situations. Kelly states, “ER was not the place for those 2 kids. When I heard of the CAC, I knew I wanted to be a supporter.” Shortly after, Kelly joined the CAC’s Board and began implementing ideas and providing resources to continue to further help the CAC grow. Currently Kelly is working with CAC Staff to construct ways in which teens can become more involved with the Center through volunteering and mentorships. As the CAC continues to grow, Kelly hopes her role with the CAC also continues to develop. Kelly’s long term goal is to receive Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) training to eventually be able to provide SANE/SART services to the victims we see here at the Center.
In addition to their support, we thank Kelly and her family for their commitment to our mission: reducing trauma to child victims of sexual and physical abuse by providing the Lapeer community with a safe and friendly space for children to come and tell their stories. The resources they have contributed to CAC Lapeer over the years has allowed us to extend the services we provide to our families. The Child Advocacy Center of Lapeer County would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Kelly Watson and her family for being a driving force in lighting the way for a child’s future.
